A dazzling, bicycle-kick goal by junior Nedgy Nazon in the 52nd minute gave visiting College of Staten Island a 1-0 winner over SUNY-Maritime as part of non-conference play this evening in Throggs Neck, New York. The Dolphins extended to 2-1 overall on the season while the Privateers fell to 1-2.
The Nazon goal seven minutes into the second half broke open the defensive stalemate, as both teams only registered a pair of shots in the opening 45 minutes and CSI had the game’s only shot on goal to that point. Sophomore Alfonso Castaneda was the firing rod to the goal, racing in from the right side and centering a pass into the box that Nazon bicycled into the back of the net passed Maritime goalkeeper John Dunne.
From there, CSI turned back a trio of Privateers shots, all made by keeper Ahmed El-Ghareib, who picked up his second shutout of the season. Karl Weber came in for Maritime between the pipes, registering a pair of saves over the final 28 minutes.
CSI out-shot Maritime, 7-6 (4-3 on goal), while Maritime held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks taken. Maritime’s Patrick McCarty was hit with a yellow booking at the 57th minute of the game, while El-Ghareib was also shown a yellow card 10 minutes later.
For the Dolphins, the team returns to action on Friday evening at 5pm. They will travel to Bard College and play a neutral site game against SUNY – New Paltz.
