The College of Staten Island women’s tennis squad won for the second time in four days, winning their home opener this afternoon over visiting Sarah Lawrence College by a 7-2 count as part of non-conference play at the CSI Tennis Center. The Dolphins lifted their overall mark to 2-0 this season, while the Gryphons start the season at 0-1.
Play began with doubles and the Dolphins were victorious in two out of three flights. In the top-spot CSI senior tandem Sabrina Bragerton-Nasert and Madiha Mulla coasted to an 8-1 win over SLC’s Nora Landes and Sofia Reh. The other two positions were competitive and came right down to the end. In the No. 2 spot CSI claimed victory again. This time junior duo Nozima Toshpulatova and Michelle Kushnir scored an 8-6 winner over Autumn Atkinson and Juliet Slade.
CSI almost pulled off a sweep in doubles, but after grabbing an early lead, CSI fell, as SLC’s Lane Garber and Sarah Fiordaliso scored a win over freshman pair Samantha Mazier and Hannah Ramirez, by a score of 8-5.
The Dolphins were very crisp in Singles play and left little to doubt. Toshpulatova was first to score a win, taking the second spot over Atkinson, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 4, Kushnir won by the same score over Slade, and then Bragerton-Nasert clinched it with a 6-1, 6-2, win over Landes.
With the match in hand, CSI then scored wins at No. 6, with Jonaldy Edouard winning, 6-0, 7-5, over Moni Spancheska. Mulla won at the No. 3 slot, before SLC grabbed a win at No. 5 to close the match by Fiordaliso.
The Dolphins will now be idle until Thursday, September 10, when they travel for their CUNYAC-opener against Brooklyn College in Brooklyn at 4pm.
