VIERNO SCORES CUNYAC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK HONOR

After a week of CUNYAC basketball that featured a pair of contests, College of Staten Island women’s basketball freshman Nicole Vierno has picked up her first City University of New York Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week honor.  The Dolphins went 1-1 on the week, and Vierno was a huge factor, turning up quality back-to-back efforts.

In a 12-point victory over City College earlier in the week, Vierno banked 20 minutes, putting up eight points and five rebounds, adding a block and a perfect 6-6 stretch at the free-throw line.  Four days later, the Dolphins fell to Lehman College, but Vierno turned in what could be argued as her best game of the season.  The center collected 18 points on 8-11 shooting from the floor, adding seven rebounds and a whopping seven blocked shots, the highest single-game total in team history.  She also notched 33 minutes in the game, a career high.

For the season, Vierno has played in 11 of CSI’s 14 games this season, averaging 9 points and five rebounds per contest.  She leads the squad with 22 blocked shots and her 67% shooting from the free-throw line places second on the squad.

CSI will be back in action on Wednesday, travelling to York College to take on the CUNYAC-rival Cardinals at 6pm.
