The Core 100 program invites students and faculty from the College to join us for our weekly lecture series. Each week, all of the first-year students participate in lecture-discussions in groups of about 400 of their classmates. We have space in the Center for the Arts (Building 1P) Williamson Theatre to accommodate individual guests (no permission needed) and can have as many as two additional classes at each of the lectures. No permission is necessary for classes to attend, but please notify Donna Scimeca (718.982.3405) if you plan to bring a class.
The weekday lectures are 50 minutes and are all in the Williamson Theatre. They meet on the following days/times: Wednesdays at 1:25pm and 3:35pm; on Thursdays at 9:05am, 11:15am, 5:30pm, and 6:30pm; and on Saturdays at 10:10am in the Center for the Arts Lecture Hall.

“CSI V.E.T.S Panel” presented by Vito Zajda
This lecture will consist of student-veterans from various branches and will focus on their experiences in today’s military. These students bring a rich experience as young men and women who defend this country and how they developed certain specialties in the military. They will speak on the transition process from soldier to student and how their families adapted.
Vito Zajda received his MA in Liberal Studies and his BS in Finance at CSI and a BS in Accounting at St. Johns University. He teaches Core 100 at CSI and is also the Deputy Registrar and Coordinator.
Thursday, Nov. 13, 5:30pm:
“Civil Rights Movement and Its Evolution through American Democracy” presented by Joseph Musachio
This lecture will examine the historical causes of racial inequality in the United States, and how American democracy tried to achieve racial justice. Specifically, how American ideas on race changed from slavery to the Civil Rights Movement.
Joseph Musachio is a graduate of Monsignor Farrell High School and earned his BA and MA in Political Science from Brooklyn College. He also has his Sixth-Year Master’s Certificate in Administration and Supervision from CSI and has 22 years of teaching experience with the New York City Department of Education.
Thursday, Nov. 13, 6:30pm:
“What Was the Civil Rights Movement?” presented by Patrice Buffalo
This lecture will focus on the events such as reconstruction, segregation, and the Jim Crow Laws that led the cause for the Civil Rights Movement.
Patrice Buffalo has earned both of her Master’s degrees at CSl. She is a licensed New York City high school teacher and an Adjunct Lecturer in the School of Education, and she also teaches in the Core program.
Saturday, Nov. 15 at 10:10am:
“The Great Depression, Causes of the Worst Financial Crisis in Our Nation’s History” presented by John Comfort
This lecture will discuss the causes of the Great Depression and how President Roosevelt tried to correct this financial crisis.
John Comfort earned his MA in History from the College of Staten Island in 2003 and has taught classes at CSI in the Core Program and also the American Studies Program since 2006.
