The College of Staten Island will recognize the Class of 2010’s 2,106 degree candidates on Thursday, May 27 at 10:00am on the College’s Great Lawn.

Commencement will begin with welcoming remarks from College President Dr. Tomás Morales, as well as greetings from CUNY Trustee Kay Pesile ’73 and CUNY Senior Vice Chancellor for University Relations and Secretary of the Board of Trustees, Jay Hershenson, on behalf of CUNY Chancellor Dr. Matthew Goldstein.

This year’s honorary degree recipient will be Richmond College alumna and President of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), Dr. Muriel Howard ’71, who will receive a Doctor of Humane Letters degree. Prior to her current post at AASCU, Dr. Howard served as president of Buffalo State College from 1996 to 2009. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology with a minor in Elementary Education from Richmond College and a Master’s degree in Education and a PhD in Educational Organization, Administration, and Policy from the University of Buffalo.

CSI President Dr. Tomás Morales will also recognize the recent recipients of the President’s Award, Dr. Gordon Di Paolo, Lorraine Di Paolo, Robert Scamardella, and Zane Tankel, as well as other dignitaries in the audience.

The focus of the ceremony will then turn to the 2010 graduates with greetings on behalf of the faculty from Professor Marianne Jeffreys and induction of the new alumni by CSI Alumni Association President Vullnet Kolari ’98.

Kolari will also introduce student speaker Michael Young, who will be graduating Magna Cum Laude from the Macaulay Honors College at CSI, where he majored in American Studies with minors in Studio Art and Spanish. Michael received the Jeannette K. Watson Fellowship in 2008 and he has also studied abroad in Florence, Italy and Tokyo, Japan. Beyond his academic achievements, Michael is the founder and Editor-in-Chief of the Operation Three-Legged Dolphin humor magazine on campus. He is the recipient of the Student Government Service Award and the CSI Alumni Association Outstanding Student Leadership Award.

This year’s class of degree candidates will then be presented by Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. William Fritz to Dr. Morales, who will confer their degrees.

Immediately following the Commencement ceremony, Departmental Exercises will be held at various locations on campus. A reception for graduates and guests will follow in the Campus Center at 12:30pm.
