The College of Staten Island put on quite a show tonight in their home court against CUNY Athletic Conference rival City College of New York. However, the Dolphins fell short in a four-set, back and fourth volley. CCNY improved to 3-12 overall and 2-3 in CUNY. While the Dolphins fall to 2-8 overall and 2-3 in CUNY.
CCNY squeezed by to take the first set 31-29, after the Dolphins fought hard tying the game on ten occasions. The Dolphins sought out revenge in the second set taking the final five points for a 25-22 win, to tie the game at one a piece. After CCNY took a 3-0 start in set three, CSI was only able to tie the set twice without going ahead, allowing the Beavers to take a 25-19 set win. Despite taking the lead on six occasions, CCNY went on to steal the fourth set by a score of 28-26.
Ma Socorro-Calleja led the Dolphins with 29 digs and 16 kills while Vasiliki Stergioula had 17 digs and eight kills. Libero Jean-Marie Lewandowski totaled 15 digs for CSI. Setters Jennifer Samuel and Danielle Ponsiglione split the help totaling 19 and 12 assists, respectively.
Zuleyka Polanco led all players with 22 kills and 14 digs. Dalliana Toussaint had 14 kills with 21 digs. Sophia Palumbo had 32 assists.
The Dolphins will be back in action on Saturday, October 1 as they host their 5th annual Serving for a Cure Breast Cancer Awareness Game vs. Culinary Institute at 12:00 pm.
