Felipe Martínez-Pinzón (Assistant Professor) earned his Ph.D. in Spanish and Portuguese from New York University. Before joining CSI, he taught at New York University and Los Andes University (Bogotá, Colombia). His research interests focus on the relations between geography and culture, representations of tropical nature, the military memoir, 19th century travelogues and “costumbrista” texts. Dr. Martinez-Pinzon contributes to existing research by trying to show how representations of the tropics — its alleged abundance, its climate, its people, its diseases, etc. — have been a key factor in engendering violence, politics of inclusion/exclusion and geographical imaginations that contribute to forge national cultures in tropical Latin America. Besides his academic work, he has published two poetry books.
