The College of Staten Island women’s volleyball squad lost for the fourth-straight outing, posting a 3-0 loss at the hands of Mount St. Mary College in Newbugh, NY, as part of non-conference play. Individual scores were 25-17, 25-11, and 25-16. CSI fell to 5-8 with the loss, while the Knights upped their overall mark to 7-14.
After going ahead 3-1 early in the first set, Mount Saint Mary ripped off six straight points in the middle stages of the frame to pull in front 12-7. Junior Kayla Kurka sparked the run for the Knights with two service aces and a kill.
The Knights used a nine point run later in the opening set to build a 21-10 lead over the Dolphins and were not challenged again in the contest. Elizabeth Lavin registered three kills over the stretch for Mount Saint Mary who never trailed in the match after the early deficit.
Mount Saint Mary totaled 24 of their 30 kills over the first and third sets and took advantage of 20 CSI attack miscues on the night. The Knights hit .188 as a team in the match and held the visitors to a -.100 effort.
Staten Island was led by five kills from Vanessa Reyes and received a match-high 11 digs from Victoria Wong. Selma Kolenovic finished with three kills and four aces for the visitors.
For the match, Mount Saint Mary held a 30-13 advantage in kills and a 16-6 edge in service aces. The Knights have recorded double-figures in each of the last five outings and seven times so far in 2015.
CSI’s next games will be on Saturday. The Dolphins travel to Rutgers-Camden to play RU at Noon and Wilkes University at 2pm.
