Three College of Staten Island student-athletes have earned high praise from the City University of New York Athletic Conference, garnering weekly honors from the conference. Cross-country dynamo Andrew Scharf took home his fourth CUNYAC Player of the Week honor after another sensational outing. Men’s soccer freshman Kyle Coffey took home the conference’s Defender of the Week citation, and women’s soccer freshman Lauren Smith for the second time earned the CUNYAC’s Rookie of the Week award.
Scharf has been a powerhouse this season for the Dolphins on the cross-country circuit. He has been the first Dolphin to cross in each race this season and he enjoyed another terrific outing on Sunday at Van Cortlandt Park, site of the CCNY Invitational. CSI took second as a unit, and Scharf took third place overall with a 29:00.5 in the 8k event. It was the third-fastest 8k time this season by a CSI runner. CSI was crisp following a one-week layoff. This coming week they will participate in the St. Joseph’s College (LI) Invitational in their final tune-up before the CUNYAC Championship.
Brooklyn native Kyle Coffey is the latest freshman sensation making a mark on the CUNYAC soccer scene, The Dolphins are in the middle of an eight-game unbeaten streak, and Coffey is a big reason why, as the freshman goalkeeper posted back-to-back clean sheets last week in wins over John Jay College (3-0), and Lehman College (1-0). Coffey is currently 5-0 this season, posting a .750 save percentage and boasting a 0.80 goals against average. The Dolphins are back in action on Wednesday, hosting Berkeley College (NJ) at 4pm at the CSI Soccer Complex.
The Dolphins’ women’s soccer team enjoyed a sensational week, going 2-0 and defeating St. Joseph’s (BK), 10-0 and CCNY, 4-1. Freshman Lauren Smith continues to delight. The Islip, NY, native popped in a goal and an assist, scattering 9 shots between the two games. Lauren’s assist came on CSI’s first goal against the Bears, what would easily hold up as the game-winner. She scored the only second-half goal CSI would register against CCNY. The CSI women are back in action on Wednesday as well, when they travel to face St. Joseph’s College (LI) for a 7pm start in Patchogue.
