STRONG DEFENSIVE SHOWING GIVES DOLPHINS EIGHTH STRAIGHT WIN OVER YORK, 77-38

STRONG DEFENSIVE SHOWING GIVES DOLPHINS EIGHTH STRAIGHT WIN OVER YORK, 77-38

The College of Staten Island women’s basketball team picked up their eighth straight win this afternoon with a 77-38 rout of York College. The women played their first home game in two weeks at the CSI Sports & Recreation Center and improved their home record to 7-2 on the year.  Overall the Dolphins are 16-4 this season while holding steady atop the CUNYAC standings with a 11-1 record.  The Cardinals’ struggles continued this afternoon as they fell to 2-18 overall and 2-10 in the CUNAYC.

Christina Pasaturo kept her 20-plus point streak alive with another 24 point outing against the Cardinals, the team where they streak initially started.  Pasaturo also added four more three’s to her nation leading 175 increase her total to 179 made three-pointers on the year. Victoria Crea had her third highest scoring output of the season with a 16 point outburst, good for second on the team.  Tallying career highs in rebounds was Nicole Imbesi and Lina Bitar who both grabbed eight rebounds.

The Dolphins’ defense has been stout at home this season as they have allowed opponents to score and average of 59 points.  This afternoon the Dolphins’ defense was astounding, holding the Cardinals to just 38 points in the game, the lowest total the Dolphins have held anyone to this season.  Staten Island was able to force 22 turnovers with 18 steals.  The women had a strong showing on the glass, outrebounding the Cardinals 55-33, their second highest rebounding margin of the season.

The Dolphins opened up this afternoon contest on a 21-2 run where the Cardinals turned the ball of eight times.  Staten Island did not waste their opportunities as they outscored York 10-0 on fast break points.  Rosa Perone and Samantha Flecker were able to find success in the paint to help the Dolphins edge out the Cardinals 18-4 in the paint.  The Dolphins’ fast paced attack drained the shorthanded Cardinals of their stamina which allowed the Dolphins to out-pace the Cardinals 27-4 in the opening stanza.

Angelique Price got going in the second quarter where she converted on a layup inside before following that up with a pair of free throws.  Having a large lead did not make the Dolphins complacent as they kept the pressure on to keep themselves atop the CUNYAC standings.  The Cardinals had a solid second quarter, scoring 13 point, two shy of the Dolphins’ 15.  Mayan Charles used her height to give the Cardinals second chance opportunities but she was unable to find the same success on the offensive side of the floor as she would finish the afternoon with two points and 12 rebounds.

The Dolphins came out in the third quarter and once again poured it on, outscoring the Cardinals 23-5.  CSI ended the third quarter up 65-22 which was ignited by a 20-2 run in the third.  Flecker battled on the defensive boards tonight tallying 12 total rebounds, a team high, with 10 of them on defense.  Flecker was also effective on the offensive side, dishing out a team high seven assists while adding eight points of her own.

With the game out of reach the Dolphins went into cruise control mode in the fourth quarter and used up the shot clock before taking their shot.  The Cardinals had their best quarter of the game in the fourth, outscoring the Dolphins 16-13 but it was too little too late as the Dolphins’ lead was too big to overcome.

The Dolphins will return to action on Monday where they will travel to take on Drew University at 7:00 pm which is a make-up game from last Monday.
