With another week of competition in the books, the College of Staten Island baseball and softball teams are rewarded again, with the announcement of three weekly awards from the City University of New York Athletic Conference. Senior Alison Meagher earned Pitcher of the Week honors in softball while Samantha MacPherson and Michael Crocco took Rookie of the Week honors from their respective sports.
The Pitcher of the Week citation is the first this season for Meagher, who last week earned Player of the Week honors, and it is the fourth such citation of her career. CSI only played in two games last week, but Meagher pitched in both. First she threw a complete-game win against St. Joseph’s College – LI, allowing just three runs on seven hits through seven innings, fanning eight. She then followed with three scoreless innings of relief allowing one hit in the second game of that doubleheader, silencing the Eagles bats. For the week, she was 1-0 with a 2.10 ERA fanning 11 in 10 innings. For the season, she is 5-1 with a 0.78 ERA through 36 innings.
Meagher was fierce in the circle, but few were better at the dish than MacPherson. The freshman infielder had a breakthrough weekend against SJC-LI. She went 4-7 at the plate (.571) with three RBI and a pair of runs scored. She notched a double and a triple as well. For the season, she is hitting .333 with eight doubles a triple and a home run, 12 RBI and 15 runs scored. Her Rookie of the Week honor is the first of her career.
Crocco also made his weekly award debut, putting in a nice week for the CSI baseball team. Crocco got three starts last week for the Dolphins and delivered. He led the Dolphins, batting .364 (4-11), scattering a pair of doubles with a run scored and an RBI, also walking once. For the season, he is batting .293 (12-41).
CSI softball is returning to action todat at 3pm on the road against Farmingdale State, while CSI Baseball is playing in the 15th Annual Grace Hillery Breast Cancer Awareness Night held tonight at CSI at 7pm.
