The College of Staten Island men’s soccer team got their 2019 season officially underway yesterday and it did not go as planned as they fell to the host Rutgers-Camden side, 2-0. They will look to bounce back today with a date against Rowan University also at RU-Camden, at 2 pm.

All-Time Series: Rowan leads, 4-0
Last Meeting: September 9, 2018 – Rowan won, 3-1
Players to Watch (CSI): CSI’s leading scorer from last year, Bryant Navarro hit the crossbar for CSI’s best chance yesterday, while Philip Lefkowitz led the way in shots to start the year. Still, CSI will be looking for their first official goal of the season this afternoon. Look for midfielders Carlos Montesinos to try and control play while Daniel Angulo earns time in the back. Jake Foeldes has started both games for the Dolphins this season in goal, the first an exhibition against Ramapo. Chris Carucci may also see time between the pipes as well.
Players to Watch (RU): Jay Vandermark has been a force to be reckoned with as he has already tallied four goals in just two starts this season on a total of eight shots. Rowan’s only other multi-goal scorer thus far is Michael Ferrera, who has a pair of markers and an assist on five shots. James Weinberg has started two games in goal, winning both so fat this season, posting over 175 minutes played.
News & Notes: Today marks the fifth year in a row that the two teams are meeting and it has been a series owned by the Profs as they have an all-time 4-0 lead in the series. Three of the four wins have been decided by 3-1 scores, while the other was a 4-0 win by Rowan back in 2016. This is the second year in a row they are meeting in Rutgers-Camden’s Kickoff Classic. Rowan took the win last year, 3-1.
What’s Next?: After today’s game CSI will be back in action on Wednesday at home for a date with NCAA Division II Concordia College (NY). It marks their first DII test of the season. Rowan is next in action on Friday next week, on the road against the University of Chicago, with kickoff scheduled for 8 pm.
