College of Staten Island men’s swimming junior captain Tim Sweeney is representing the Dolphins at the ECAC Winter Championships this weekend at the Nassau County Aquatics Center in East Meadow, NY. Sweeney participated in a series of events this morning and this evening and was tremendous at every turn, securing three NCAA B-cut times and setting a new school record in the process.
In his signature event of the Butterfly this morning, Sweeney swam in the 200-yard event and posted a time of 1:53.26, good enough for B-cut time and good for third place overall in the 27-man event. It was a tremendous first step for the junior.
Play then picked up with a second session in the evening, which saw Sweeney participate in two events, the 100-yard Backstroke and the 100-yard Butterfly.
First in the 100-yard Backstroke, Sweeney was brilliant in a run of 51.79, less than three-tenths off of the winner, Scott Quirie from NCAA Division I NJIT. Sweeney came in second overall, just missing B-cut time for NCAA Championship competition.
Then came the 100-yard Butterfly and Sweeney left little to doubt. Sweeney won the race outright at 50.28, just beating Pace’s Nianzhong Liu by 0.13 seconds. The time is also a new CSI record, beating Yury Zimarev’s old record of 50.76 set in 2014.
All three of Sweeney’s times today are within the Top 8 swimmers in the nation in NCAA Division III. The junior isn’t finished either. He will participate in the 200-yard Individual Medley tomorrow. He recently broke a CSI record in that event this season, and is seeded third in the field.
